Rochelle Youk is in a space between Korean and American. It is being in this space that has prompted the main inquiry of her practice: cultural exchange and how it happens both in the past and today. Paintings in her current body of work pull source material from traditional Korean folk crafts such as paintings, wooden window screens (Chang ho), Choseon era ceramics, commercially traded textiles and reorients them in new and untried narratives. Most recently she created a painting in collaboration with local musician Dan Lee, for his multimedia performance, The Magpies of Seoul, based on a Korean folktale. Currently, she also works as a bookbinder for Bay Area artists and publishers, including the Arion Press, where she completed an apprenticeship in 2012. Her work can be viewed at her website www.rochelleyouk.com and on instagram @roachyface.
